EASTERN CHAD — On April 19, 2026, the Darfur Network for Development (DND) successfully completed a school supplies distribution initiative benefiting 123 children residing in a refugee camp in Ourang Refugee Camp in Eastern Chad. The project was carried out by a contracted field team operating on behalf of DND, delivering essential educational materials directly to children and families within the camp.

About the Project

The distribution was designed to address a critical gap in access to basic learning tools among school-age children in the camp. DND contracted a local field representative to coordinate and execute the distribution, ensuring that supplies reached registered beneficiaries in an organized and accountable manner.

Key project details:

•       Date of Distribution: April 19, 2026

•       Location: Refugee camp, eastern Chad (one distribution zone)

•       Number of children reached: 123

•       Supplies distributed: Notebooks and pens

Why This Matters

Children in refugee settings face significant barriers to education, including limited access to the most basic school supplies. For many families displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan — including those from the Darfur region — even simple tools such as notebooks and pens represent the difference between a child attending school and staying home.

By providing these materials, DND aims to reduce one of the most immediate practical obstacles preventing children from participating in education and to reinforce the message that their learning matters, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Implementation Approach

DND engaged a contracted field team with established presence in the camp to carry out the distribution. This approach allowed the organization to leverage existing trust and logistical knowledge within the community while maintaining oversight of the process through documentation and reporting requirements.

The field team coordinated directly with community members to ensure an orderly distribution, verify recipient eligibility, and document each handover. Completion of this project reflects DND’s commitment to accountable, community-centered programming.

"Every notebook and pen we put in a child's hands is a message that their future matters. Despite everything these families have endured, education remains their greatest hope and DND is committed to protecting it."

Looking Ahead

This distribution represents an early step in DND’s broader education programming in eastern Chad. The organization is conducting an ongoing education survey in camp communities to better understand enrollment rates, learning conditions, teacher availability, and the specific needs of girls and children with disabilities.

DND will use findings from the survey and lessons learned from this distribution to design future interventions that are more comprehensive, data-driven, and responsive to the needs of the communities it serves.
